Aluminum is a light metal, abundant in the Earth's crust, but rarely
found free in nature. Its alloys are commonly used, but pure aluminum is
soft. When first discovered, it was extremely expensive, and European
nobility sometimes ate using aluminum flatware. The top of the
Washington Monument is capped with aluminum, obtained from gemstones. It
is obtained by refining bauxite.
